ইংরেজ ইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া কোম্পানি বাংলায় কর্তৃত্ব প্রতিষ্ঠা করার পর প্রশাসন চালাতে এ দেশী ভাষাজ্ঞান, সাহিত্য, সমাজ, ইতিহাস ইত্যাদি জানার প্রয়োজন অনুভব করে ১৮০০ খ্রিষ্টাব্দের ১৮ ফোর্ট উইলিয়াম কলেজ প্রতিষ্ঠা করে। কোম্পানির তরুণ কর্মকর্তাদের প্রশিক্ষণ দানই ছিল এর প্রধান কাজ। ১৮০১ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে উইলিয়াম কেরির নেতৃত্বে ফোর্ট উইলিয়ায় কলেজে বাংলা বিভাগ চালু করা হয়।
